Maharashtra police gun down 12 Maoists in Gadchiroli, seize weapons; two cops injured in encounter

Police in the western Indian state of Maharashtra launched a major operation against Maoists Wednesday morning (Jul 17) in the Gadchiroli district. The operation, which began at 10 am and lasted for six hours, ended with the killing of 12 Maoists. Several weapons were also recovered from them, including 3 AK47s, 2 INSAS, 1 carbine, and an SLR.
Two police officers suffered bullet injuries during the operation but are out of danger now. They are being treated in Nagpur, as per media reports.

Maharashtra police launched the operation after it received information that around 15 Maoists were camping near the Vandoli village close to the border with theneighbouring state of Chhattisgarh.

A massive operation was launched under the leadership of the Deputy SP in dense forests. An intense exchange of fire soon began between the two sides.
When the operation ended, the dead bodies of 12 Maoists were recovered from the scene.

Police identified one Maoist as DVCM Laxman Atram, alias Vishal Atram. The other 11 bodies couldn't be identified. Meanwhile, a search operation is underway to trace more Maoists in the area.
