US special envoy to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad to visit India
Zalmay Khalilzad US special envoy on Afghanistan
US special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad will be in Delhi in the next few weeks. This will be his secondvisit to India this year. He was in India in early January when he met external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj.
The State Department in a release said,"Zalmay Khalilzad will travel to Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, and the United Kingdom from April 21st to May 11th, as part of the overall effort to facilitate a political settlement that ends the conflict in Afghanistan."
Adding further, the release said, in London, Moscow, Islamabad, and New Delhi, he will work to build international support for the Afghan peace process to help ensure that any peace settlement reached will be sustainable."
Foriegn secretary Vijay Gokhale had met the US envoy in March in Washington andhad appraised India's view on the Afghan peace process.
India which backs"Afghan-owned, Afghan-led and Afghan-controlled"was clearly conveyed to US officials. Gokhale had also conveyedthat New Delhi would like continuation of current political structure which has beenarrived at after 18 years.
India has been engaging with regional countries - Iran,Russia, China, central Asian countries -regarding the Afghan peace process.
