In pics: Imran Khan assassination attempt: What actually happened?

The protracted anti-government march was being led by the former Pakistani prime minister toward Islamabad. On Thursday, the march had reached its seventh day.
 

As part of his campaign to compel the government to call early elections, Khan was travelling in a sizable convoy of trucks and automobiles toward the capital, Islamabad, when the incident took place, according to the police, in the Wazirabad region of the eastern Punjab province.

Khan is being shifted to Shoukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore, sources said. A medical board has been formed under the supervision of Dr Faisal Sultan, former health minister in Imran Khan’s cabinet.

Imran Ismail, a PTI member, claimed to Pakistan's Bol TV that party leader Imran Khan had been shot "three to four" times in the leg. 

Ismail claimed he was standing next to Imran when the attack took place. Faisal Javed Khan, a member of the senate of Pakistan, since March 2018 has also been injured. He added that the attacker was standing precisely in front of the container and was carrying an AK-47.

Khan was wounded in the shin but not seriously hurt, according to a party aide. “A man opened fire with an automatic weapon. Several people are wounded. Imran Khan is also injured,” Asad Umar told Reuters 

It was not immediately known who the shooter was who was detained on the site. The shooting has not yet been attributed to any particular organisation.

Minutes after attacking Imran Khan, the attacker is spotted carrying a gun throughout the long march. As the attacker tries to grab the gun away from him, a young man can be seen preventing him. The man who allegedly tried to kill Imran Khan during the march was detained, while some accounts claimed he was also shot to death.
